Health and life sciences wayfinding · Emily Karam
This wayfinding system was developed for the Health and Life Sciences Building at the University of Reading to enhance clarity and ease of movement. It addresses real navigation challenges, including ambiguous entry points, repetitive floor layouts, and a lack of visual cues.
The solution organises the building into district-based zones across three floors, supported by colour-coded signage and multilingual typography. Visual elements are inspired by molecular structures and organic forms, reflecting the building’s scientific purpose. The result is a cohesive system that simplifies navigation, reinforces the building’s identity, and enhances the experience for all users.

An Examiners’ Award for Excellence goes to Emily Karam for her wayfinding project. The examiners commend the comprehensive progression of reflective practice through each of the ‘discovery’, ‘transformation’ and ‘making’ stages. They also particularly note the high level of critical reflection in the associated project report.
