Health and Life Sciences wayfinding | Ritik Shah

This a multilingual wayfinding system for the University of Reading’s Health & Life Sciences building incorporates both English and Hindi. Despite being a very well-constructed and costly facility, the building suffered from inadequate wayfinding provisions. With its extensive use of wood in its architectural design, the wayfinding system is based around this material.

The resulting system was dynamic, colourful, visually striking and multi-layered, with the aim of enhancing navigation for students, staff and visitors to the building’s museum alike. Through thoughtful use of wood-inspired elements, the system sought to simplify and streamline movement through the complex space.

A set of custom pictograms is included in the system, enhancing visual communication throughout the building. These pictograms were carefully crafted to match the chosen typeface, incorporating elements such as the dot of the ‘i’ and the curves of other letters, ensuring a cohesive visual language across all components of the wayfinding system.

A a detailed map of the facility is carefully designed to provide clear and intuitive guidance to users, helping them navigate the various floors and areas of the building efficiently.
