Harris Garden | Kiana Chan
Harris Gardens is located on the White Knight Campus of the University of Reading and provides important leisure facilities for university students, staff, the local community and an increasing number of visitors from further afield. The garden is not only a recreational space but also supports teaching and conservation efforts. To improve accessibility, a bilingual wayfinding system was designed. Traditional Chinese was chosen in recognition of the need for non-Latin second languages.
To aid navigation within Harris Garden, the wayfinding system features distinct zones with specific colours. The Picnic Area (pink) provides a relaxing spot under cherry blossoms. The Recreation Area (blue) serves as a social hub for gatherings and photography. The Wellbeing Area (green) offers a peaceful space for yoga and meditation. The Jogging Path encircles the garden for physical activities. The final colours have been adjusted to ensure visibility and accessibility, taking into account factors like vibrancy differences and colour blindness.
