Complex texts · Sarah Wise de Jong
The project brief was to design and produce a series of six annotated classic books. The design should adapt to different types of material which may be presented in complex texts – introductions, footnotes, explanatory notes, translations and bibliographies.

With my series, I designed a layout with modern elements such as lowercase and sans-serif titles. To create a cohesive look across all six titles, I needed to research typographic conventions for academic and annotated texts and work efficiently within Adobe InDesign to format different types of text.

As part of the project, a typesetting specification was needed to explain typographic conventions and choices made in designing different textual elements. This reflected on the design’s success as something which could be applied to a series of books in a standardised way.
