Transgender starter guides | Ryann Carney
For those looking to begin hormone replacement therapy (HRT) it can be hard to find accurate and relevant information. For the loved ones of transgender people HRT can be a stressful unknown, and it’s often challenging to know how to best support the person they care about. The Testosterone starter guides are two pamphlets that aim to address this issue, providing pertinent and accurate information in one place.
The first pamphlet, A starter guide to Testosterone, is aimed at individuals who are looking to start HRT. It covers the changes they can expect, ways to take testosterone, and information about risks and finding support.
The second pamphlet, A starter guide to supporting your loved one on testosterone, is targeted at the friends and family of transgender individuals. It goes over similar information to the first pamphlet, including changes from testosterone, but in less detail. The pamphlet also contains basic educational information about HRT and its benefits. Most importantly, there is practical guidance on what support looks like.
This information is communicated through text, but also through illustration and information graphics using visual metaphor. Both pamphlets employ friendly illustrations and a calm colour palette to reassure and inform readers. Throughout each pamphlet there are stories from those with experiences with HRT.
This project was created with feedback and guidance from two transgender men.
