MA Communication Design student work

Typeface Design

The Typeface Design project spans both semesters, and results in a substantial family with design challenges across script coverage, styles, weights, and optical sizes. Seminars cover the discourse in the field, and help shape research throughout the year. Students work on an extended family covering a combination of Latin, Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Devanagari, together with a minority or extinct script depending on self-initiated project briefs. Projects are grounded in real user needs, and resonate with the material and cultural environments in which typefaces are experienced. Projects incorporate research with primary sources, document archives, and work with printing technologies. Collaborative workshops build familiarity with scripts and writing tools, and build a methodology for working across scripts.
