Reducing food waste | Emi Iida

1.2 billion tonnes of food are being wasted each year, equalling to one third of the world’s food production. Food waste is a big problem in the UK; it is estimated that the UK was responsible for 6.4 million tonnes of food waste each year. While 2.5 million people in the UK rely on food banks, 6.4 million tonnes of edible food are being thrown away. 70% of that is binned by households.

This project aimed to reduce avoidable food waste, by raising awareness of the problem and providing ways to tackle it correctly.

Final design: A poster to inform about food waste and encourage the students to buy food wisely. The poster would be hung in the common kitchen in their halls.

An app for restaurant owners included a dashboard to provide and overview of wastage over time, and a function where users can record food waste according to given categories.

Thinking about ways to visualise sets of data that would be useful for restaurant owners, and useful ways to quantify wastage (weight and money)
